Students in grades 3 through 8 are encouraged to read as many of the 15 Sunshine State Young Reader Award (SSYRA) books as possible then take on other schools to see who really knows their stuff! Media Specialist Mrs. Payne, 5th Grade Reading Teacher Mrs. Whalen, and Teaching Paraprofessional Mrs. Williams will sponsor the elementary after school club and coach this year's elementary team. We'll hold our first organizational meeting with interested 3rd through 5th grade students on Friday, December 15th, from 2:15 to 3:30 in the Media Center. All 3rd through 5th graders who wish to be part of our SSYRA book club will help choose a day for the club to meet after school each week during the spring semester. Join in on engaging book talks, brain games, and fun! From the group of ARR club participants, a competitive team of 6 high achieving and committed students will eventually be formed to represent our school at the Lee County School District Battle of the Books. The ARR club meetings are open to anyone who would like to attend and enjoy the 15 novels together though. If your 3rd, 4th, or 5th grader wants to read the SSYRA novels and join the ARR club, please email Mrs. Payne at [email protected] so she can send a required permission slip and inform you of future meeting dates and times. Please tell us whether your child will be picked up in front of the school after the meeting or will need to go to the Rec. Center at 3:30 on Friday, December 15th. Mrs. Base is also currently taking names of middle school students interested in her Battle of the Books team and will once again coach that team’s efforts to recapture their championship title won just a few years ago.
