MATH CAMP

Our Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) tests are quickly approaching. The FSA is one measure of a student’s achievement of Florida’s education standards, which were developed and implemented to ensure that all students are ready for success in college, careers, and life. The test results allow us to determine whether the grade level goals are being met and if students are ready to move on to the next level. We are inviting all middle school students to join us for one night to review skills that they may need a little help prior to testing. This will start right after school in Ms. Scarnato’s room and work until 6:15 p.m. During that time, we will be providing a review that is aligned with skills needed for the FSA. We will take some time out for snacks and breaks. The boot camp is free to any student that is willing to give up their evening.   Tonight, April 23rd is for Pre-Algebra students.

CONGRATULATIONS TO SOPHIA SCHROY FOR WINNING THE KIDS TAG ART PROGRAM AWARD

Last Monday morning a group of us: Mr. Larry Hart the Lee County Tax Collector, Mr. Marshall T. Bower the President and CEO of the Lee County Foundation, Sophia’s parents, Tylor Stewart the art teacher, Jamie Reid the Assistant Principal, and the Sea TV Filming Crew all snuck in to Mrs. Whalen’s 5th grade classroom to surprise Sophia with the best of the best license plate design. The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools and Lee County Tax Collector’s Office recognize students and teachers of Lee County Schools by awarding them for their dedication to the Kids Tag Art Program. This year the theme for the design was “Reach for the Stars”. Sophia’s design was chosen to be made into a license plate this year. They all came to recognize her talent and share in the excitement. Each year, The Sanibel School 5th grade artists participate in this design program, which offers funds to promote the arts in the Lee County schools. The 49 art teachers from the participating schools received $800 each in grant money to utilize in their classrooms. Thanks to them for funding our art program, and congratulations to Sophia Schroy for her incredible talents!

CONGRATULATIONS FLORIDA JR. DUCK STAMP WINNERS: Did you know that the Florida Junior Duck stamp contest was started here at Sanibel School over 25 years ago?  2017-2018 marks the 25th year of the creation of the Federal Jr Duck Stamp conservation and design program. This dynamic art and science based curriculum teaches wetland and waterfowl conservation to students K-12 graders across the nation.  Florida continues to be a success with over 2,110 entries participating state-wide. This was a large turnout considering a lot of schools, teachers, and students did not participate due to hurricane Irma. Ding Darling received entries from over 40 cities state-wide.

The Sanibel School had six Honorable Mention Winners this year: Olivia Kauffold, Abbie Wheeler, Darren Jenkins, Sophia DeCosta, Molly Dunn and Adeline Von Wowern.

We also had two 1st place winners: Vanessa Kelly and Gia Lackenby.

All Jr. Duck Stamp winners are invited to a special ceremony on October 13th at 1:00 PM. Invitations will be sent out.

CONGRATULATIONS to all The Sanibel School artists for another successful year!

FALL BOOK DRIVE GIVING BRINGS JOY TO BONITA!

Hurricane Irma sure did mess up our calendar, but she only brought out the best in our kids, families, and community.  When our kids knew they were going to receive new books at our fall book fair, they asked to give used books from their own personal libraries to bring joy and hope to other kids who lost everything in the big storm.  Our students, local author Kyle Miller, and local news reporter Jeff Lysiak all donated beautiful children’s books which we then were able to present to the children of Bonita Springs Elementary School.  Many of their homes in the Imperial River area were devastated in the flooding before, during, and after Irma.  It makes me truly proud to relay that those storm victims received 505 books because of The Sanibel School’s collective generosity.  Thank you, everyone for letting our community know that we care.
