THE SANIBEL SCHOOL MONDAY REPORTER FOR 12-18-17

THE SANIBEL SCHOOL IS A SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE.

It is with great excitement and honor that we announce to you that we have been recognized by the FL DOE as a School Of Excellence.   This means that our school received 80% or higher of the points to become an A school for the past 3 years.  We were well above this for all 3 years.   We are very proud of our students, teachers, and staff for all of their hard work.  We are honored and humbled by this award.

Freedom!

This is probably the last time I can write in the Monday Reporter…  I have enjoyed SO many aspects here at The Sanibel School.  I will miss you ALL.  I will only be a phone call away, though.  The most exhilarating thing about retirement is not having a schedule to follow and I will never have to ask for a day off.  I am going to take time to travel, do arts and crafts and most especially, spend lots of time with my grandchildren!   And, as they say, as one chapter ends, another begins, I welcome to this new found freedom!  Linda Reynolds

THE OLD SANIBEL SCHOOLHOUSE FESTIVITIES LUMINARY NIGHT:

The Sanibel School is very special. It was the first school in Lee County to be desegregated so that white and black children could go to school together. That happened in 1963. Before The Sanibel School, there was an old one-room Schoolhouse at the Historical Village. It was built in 1896 and is the oldest building in the Village. It was at Periwinkle Way and Bailey Road. In 1903, it was moved down the road to Periwinkle Way and Purdy Road to make it easier for children on the west side of Sanibel to go to school. It stayed there for 100 years until it was moved to the Historical Village. Teachers taught grades 1 through 8 in this one-room schoolhouse. Grades were separated in rows running from front to back. One of the first teachers was Lettie Nutt, and she was paid $2.50 per student per semester. Another teacher, Nancy McCann, wore bobby sox and taught baseball at recess. This one-room school closed in 1964.

The festivities, for the evening start at 3:30 and end at 5:30 on Friday, Dec. 1, 2017. The old Schoolhouse will be open during the entire time. This is our annual Luminary Open House, with free admission, refreshments, and holiday music.

The following students have work displayed in the schoolhouse this year: Kindergarten: Ivery Williams. Grade 1: Dillon Barron, Maja Mossberg, Regan Gould, Danylo Zacharievich. Grade 2: Lilly Wolf, Jillian Breece, Yuan Bonhayag, Kirby Padgett, Madden Johnson. Grade 3: Sammy Wells, Pierce Farhat, Hayden Fuller, Chloe Peelman, and Rivkah Livermon. CONGRATULATIONS TO JOHNNY JENSEN FOR EARNING A PLACE IN THE ALL STATE MIDDLE SCHOOL MIXED CHOIR!

Congratulations 8th grade student Johnny Jensen for earning a place in the All State Middle School Mixed Choir for the second year in a row!  Johnny is the second student from The Sanibel School participating in All State this year.  As previously announced, Summer Stewart, a 5th grade student, has been accepted to the All State Elementary Choir!

The All State Middle School Mixed Choir consists of the most talented middle school singers from across the state of Florida and is made up of just over a hundred students.  Over a thousand students auditioned to be a part of this ensemble.  It is an honor for Johnny to have been accepted.  He will travel to Tampa, FL in January to be a part of the All State Choir at the Florida Music Educators Association Conference.  He will participate in daily rehearsals and workshops, and culminate his experience with the All State Middle School Mixed Choir concert.  It is sure to be a memorable experience!

In order to be accepted, Johnny had to go through a difficult audition process.  He had to take and pass a written test on music theory concepts, perform a sight singing test, and prepare all of the choir’s repertoire to be recorded for his “vocal audition.”  Johnny has spent many hours practicing for these auditions.  We are very proud of Johnny for his hard work, dedication, and for this great accomplishment. We know he will do a great job representing The Sanibel School in All State!

MESSAGE FROM THE COUNSeLOR…6 Easy Tips to Drink More Water

Drinking a substantial amount of water daily is tough. Don’t worry, SELF Magazine has a couple of easy tips that will have you drinking more water in no time!

  1. Add flavor to your water by adding a bit of excitement – dunking fresh fruit or veggie slices into your pitcher
  2. Drink a glass after every bathroom break – head to the kitchen after a bathroom break to grab a glass of water for the walk back to your desk
  3. Drink water with every meal – drinking a full glass before each meal can help curb your calorie intake and satisfy your water intake goal
  4. Dilute sugary drinks with water – water down your daily habit of drinking juice, lemonade or iced tea with a couple of drops of water
  5. It’s okay to choose sparkling or mineral water – don’t go for the soda, sparkling water or mineral water is a great alternative
  6. Select water-rich foods – this may be sneaky but it is a great way to increase the amount of water you consume. Try eating more cucumbers, zucchini, watermelon and grapefruit. Check out more water consumption tips at SELF.com.

SAC UPDATE

At the November 8 meeting, SAC members learned that FISH of Sanibel has volunteered to sponsor a program for parents at the Community House that would address some of the dangers that young people are facing and steps that parents can and should be taking to monitor their children and keep them safe. Chuck Vilardi is planning to invite FISH to host the program on campus with the hope that more parents will attend.  In the last few months, there have been several incidents in the community related to alleged drug use, alcohol abuse, and posting and distributing photos and videos. Chuck Vilardi explained that he feels that students need to hear about the dangers and illegality of drugs, alcohol use, and sharing photos and videos. It was discussed that in the light of the death last week of an FSU student due to alcohol poisoning, this is an excellent time to bring in officers from the Lee County Sheriff’s office to educate the 5th -8thgrade students about drugs, alcohol, and the distribution of photos and videos through social media. It was suggested that officers from different departments of the Sherriff’s office come to make a strong presentation to students.

AXE SPRAY AND ROLL-ON

Parents, please do not allow students to bring Axe Spray (cologne) to school. Middle School students are also not allowed to have this spray in their backpack or locker. This spray has recently caused problems with staff members and students who are allergic or sensitive to it. Thank you for your help.

CITIZENS OF THE WEEK

Students in Kindergarten and 1st Grade earn Sea Horse tickets for good behavior, helpful attitude, and an eagerness to learn. Each week we select a Sea Horse ticket winner from these classes.  These students get to come to the office and select a prize from our prize cabinet. The following students are this week’s citizens of the week: Rowan Moore, Evan Nuckolls, Taylor O’Brien, and Teagan Clark. Congratulations!

PARENT HOME ACCESS TO STUDENT GRADES

Parents, please use FOCUS (focus.leeschools.net) as your primary source for real-time information on your student’s grades and homework assignment status.  There are several reasons why FOCUS is the application of choice.  FOCUS contains real-time information and is always up to date.  You see the same information as the teacher and your student.  Middle School students log into FOCUS every Friday to check their progress, so these students are extremely familiar with how to access their gradebook information.  Instructions on how to access and use FOCUS are on our school website as well as on the Lee County website and Launchpad.

The former source of gradebook information, Parentlink, has been experiencing technical difficulties and hasn’t issued a report since the last week of September.  It will not be back on line until the company and the District are assured that the issues have been resolved and that the correct gradebook information is being pushed out.  However, Parentlink is not real time, so even when the application issues are resolved, please use and depend on FOCUS as your source for your student’s gradebook information.  Parentlink is a great application for school to community communications, but FOCUS is the tool for gradebooks.  Thanks!

Nonfiction Reading HAS Improved but Still Short of College Readiness Levels

The amount of non-fiction read by students in grades 1-12 has steadily increased since the adoption of new learning standards introduced in the Common Core. Yet students — especially those in high school — don't read to the level of difficulty they should and fall "far short" of what may be required for college and career preparedness. At the same time, students who begin the school year behind their peers can make up for lost time with the right standards in place.  Read more at: https://thejournal.com/articles/2015/12/09/nonfiction-reading-improved-but-still-short-of-college-readiness-levels.aspx
